Richard Bevan 1994–1995 Horses Led Up | National Hunt Season Analysis

Richard Bevan – Horses I Led Up (1994–1995 National Hunt Season)

The 1994–1995 National Hunt season was one of the most significant periods of Richard Bevan’s racecourse experience as a stable lad responsible for leading horses in the parade ring and pre-race environment.

Although comprising only eleven racecourse appearances, the season was distinguished by the exceptional quality of horses involved and the level of racing contested. Appearances came at many of Britain’s leading National Hunt venues, including Cheltenham, Sandown Park, Ascot, Newbury, Kempton Park and Wetherby.

The campaign ultimately culminated in success at the Cheltenham Festival, the highest-profile achievement recorded during Bevan’s years working within National Hunt racing.

Across the full season, Bevan led up horses on:

11 racecourse appearances
4 winners
2 second-place finishes
2 fourth-place finishes
9 completions
82% completion rate

The four victories produced a strike rate of 36.4%, an impressive return given the standard of opposition encountered throughout the season.

While the number of runners was relatively modest, the quality of results made this one of the strongest seasons within his racecourse record.

The season began positively when Wonder Man finished second in the Mitsubishi Shogun Handicap Chase at Cheltenham in November 1994.

A week later, Plunder Bay provided the first victory of the campaign when winning the Beginners Juvenile Novices Hurdle at Leicester. From that point the season increasingly became associated with Viking Flagship, one of the leading two-mile steeplechasers of the era.

His victory in the Tingle Creek Trophy Chase at Sandown Park represented the first major success of the season before another important victory followed in the Castleford Chase at Wetherby during the Christmas period.

The middle part of the campaign contained both success and adversity.

Viking Flagship finished fifth in the Victor Chandler Handicap Chase at Ascot and later fell in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury, one of only two non-completions recorded during the season.

Juvenile hurdler Shankar also suffered a fall at Warwick before returning to finish fourth at Huntingdon.

Despite these setbacks, Viking Flagship regained momentum with a second-place finish in the Emblem Chase at Kempton Park, providing an ideal preparation for the Cheltenham Festival.

Horse-specific performance context:

Viking Flagship – The dominant horse of the season. Won the Tingle Creek Trophy Chase, Castleford Chase and Queen Mother Champion Chase. Central to the campaign and responsible for three of the four victories recorded.

Plunder Bay – Provided the first winner of the season in the Beginners Juvenile Novices Hurdle at Leicester.

Wonder Man – Began the season with a solid second-place finish at Cheltenham.

Corner Boy – Produced a respectable fourth-place finish in novice chase company at Newbury.

Shankar – Experienced mixed fortunes, falling at Warwick before recovering to finish fourth at Huntingdon.

The defining moment of the season came on 15 March 1995 when Viking Flagship won the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

As one of National Hunt racing’s championship events, victory in the race represented the highest-profile success associated with Bevan’s racecourse record as a stable lad.

Participation in a Festival-winning campaign elevated the season beyond its statistical achievements and placed it among the most important periods of his involvement in professional racing.

The 1994–1995 season can be summarised as follows:

A stable-lad campaign defined by quality rather than quantity, featuring involvement with championship-class horses and major victories at the highest level of National Hunt racing.

Although only eleven racecourse appearances were recorded, the season produced an exceptional strike rate and included success in some of Britain’s most prestigious jumping contests.

Overall conclusion:

One of the strongest seasons within Richard Bevan’s racecourse archive, highlighted by four victories from eleven appearances and crowned by Viking Flagship’s Queen Mother Champion Chase triumph at the Cheltenham Festival.

The combination of elite horses, major race victories and a high success rate makes the 1994–1995 campaign a standout chapter of his National Hunt racing experience.
