Richard Bevan – Horses I Led Up at the Races: 1994 Flat Racing Season Analysis

Richard Bevan – Horses I Led Up at the Races 1994 Flat Racing Season

Richard Bevan’s recorded racecourse lead-up duties during the 1994 Flat season centred exclusively on Silver Wisp, a horse campaigned in conditions and Group-level company.

The season comprised four appearances between April and August, covering races at Pontefract, Newmarket, Royal Ascot and Newbury.

The campaign demonstrated a progression from competitive early-season form to participation in established Pattern races, reflecting the horse’s placement at a higher level during the middle part of the season.

The season record consisted of 4 races, producing 1 win and 1 second-place finish.

Silver Wisp completed all four races, resulting in a 100% completion rate.

The best result was victory in the Group 2 Madagans Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket. The remaining results were second, fifth and eleventh.

Overall, half of the season’s appearances resulted in a top-two finish.

The season began on 19 April at Pontefract in the Fryston Conditions Stakes, where Silver Wisp finished second of eight runners.

Ten days later, the horse improved on that performance when winning the Group 2 Madagans Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket, defeating seven rivals.

The campaign then moved to Royal Ascot on 17 June for the Hardwicke Stakes, another Group 2 contest, where Silver Wisp finished eleventh of eleven runners.

The final appearance came on 13 August in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury, where the horse finished fifth of six runners, concluding the season.

Silver Wisp was the sole horse associated with Richard Bevan’s recorded lead-up duties during the 1994 Flat season.

The horse showed useful form during the spring, progressing from a runner-up finish at Pontefract to Group 2 success at Newmarket.

Subsequent appearances in major middle-distance races proved more demanding, particularly at Royal Ascot and later at Newbury.

Despite mixed results after the Newmarket victory, Silver Wisp remained competitive enough to contest recognised Pattern races throughout the season.

The defining moment of the season occurred in the Madagans Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket on 29 April 1994.

Competing at Group 2 level, Silver Wisp recorded the campaign’s only victory, improving upon the horse’s seasonal debut effort at Pontefract.

The success represented the highest achievement of the season and established the horse’s credentials for subsequent appearances in leading middle-distance contests.

Richard Bevan’s 1994 Flat season record was based on four outings with Silver Wisp, producing one win and one second-place finish.

The campaign followed a clear arc, beginning with promising spring form, reaching its peak through Group 2 success at Newmarket, and concluding with more challenging assignments at higher-profile meetings.

Historically, the season is notable for Silver Wisp’s Jockey Club Stakes victory, which stands as the principal achievement within an otherwise compact four-race campaign.
